Show HN: A great example of ChatGPT showing real understanding
I have been pretty skeptical on ChatGPTs ability to actually understand things, rather than just parrot out the next most probable word. But this conversation has really impressed me.
My goal was this: - give it a scenario to test how it approaches a task - give it some text which outlines a strategy it could use in that task. The key here was that I didn't want to give it instructions, rather, I wanted it to be more of a mental model it could use - repeat the same scenario to see if it uses this new mental modal to it's advantage.
As you can see, the scenario was trying to sell me some oranges. The text I gave it was a description of how to use anchoring bias in negotiations. The text doesn't say anything explicit about using a higher initial price, instead saying that the first price given can be anchored to.
I was super impressed that it used the technique to it's advantage.
Until now, I had been pretty dismissive of it's ability to understand rather than just outputting a probable answer

Ask HN: Simple Auth for Website
I'm making a fairly simple website and browser extension where users will have accounts*. All I need to do is auto-create an account the first time someone uses it, then have that account auto reused every time the user visits later on the same device. A second factor like a password isn't needed. Ideally users should be able to transfer their accounts to other devices, but I'm even willing to forego that in version 1. It's supposed to be an open-source project, and to encourage adoption, I don't want it to depend on any external auth services, just a database.
Does anyone have a favorite drop-in way of doing something like this? Webauthn looks appealing, but I've never used it. Can also imagine just randomly generating some code server-side, storing it in cookies, and asking users to save it for recovery, but that feels like poorly reinventing a wheel.
Thanks
* For anyone curious, it's supposed to be a federated lightweight social network based partially on RSS.

Ask HN: Tips for B2B pilots (pricing, duration, etc.)?
My company has recently gotten a lot of interest in pilots from fairly large companies (including some household names in the education sector).
We have run pilots in the past, but typically only one at a time. This allows us to be sufficiently involved in the process of designing the pilot, understanding the goals, having input into the messaging that describes our feature and what it's supposed to do, and gathering data via interviews.
I'm worried that if we run several large-scale pilots simultaneously, we won't be able to have the same sort of involvement, and that the pilots won't go as well as a result. Should we try to run multiple simultaneously, set them up serially, or perhaps tell some of the smaller companies that we are too busy now to run a pilot with them (and that they should just make a go/no-go decision based on the existing data from our other customers — which includes a direct competitor of theirs)?
For the pilots we do run, how should we figure out the duration and pricing?
