Ask HN: Assessment tools for early employees/CTOs?

Thu, 04/24/2025 - 11:14am

Does anyone have any suggestions for a simple, reasonably quick (for the candidate) service focusing on 'core skills' like aptitude, reasoning, communication and personality type?

We're in the process of hiring our first hire - this is a software engineer who will ideally grow into a CTO and a co-founder.

The market for 'candidate assessment' is very corporate and includes things like anti-cheating systems and tech tests - I think both of these would be off-putting, useless and condescending for the type of candidates I'm trying to attract.

Show HN: I built a tool that uses AI to turn messy feedback into clear insights

Thu, 04/24/2025 - 11:07am

I built a tool that makes sense of all the messy feedback you get—whether it’s from users, customers, or anyone else. You know how feedback can be a total mess? Think emails, comments, reviews—all over the place. My tool uses AI to dig through that chaos and pull out the good stuff. It sorts everything, spots patterns, and gives you clear, useful insights you can actually act on. No more guessing or drowning in noise—it’s like having a smart helper that turns feedback into a simple plan. Excited to share it with you all!

Show HN: Master Tailwind CSS Through Interactive Learning

Thu, 04/24/2025 - 11:06am

I've spent the last year and a half building tools and SaaS projects.

I even made a starter template to quickly bootstrap new ideas using my favorite stack: Python, Postgres, Docker, Tailwind, and Svelte.

Over time, I launched several products:

- A tool to send custom notifications to all your devices easily - A tool to generate beautiful landing pages - A feature request tracker to see what your users really want - An analytics tool to track your REST API performance issues—without touching a single line of backend code

I dedicated time and effort to each of these. The result? I made very little money from them.

Ironically, my most lucrative project today is the very first one I built. It’s a platform to learn Tailwind CSS. When I started my dev journey, I really struggled with design. I wanted to learn Tailwind, but I didn't enjoy watching videos or reading through documentation. I just wanted to practice in a comfy, hands-on environment.

So I built https://interactive-tailwind.com. And to my surprise, I started getting sales without doing any real marketing (which I’m terrible at). I launched it on Product Hunt, and since then, sales have trickled in. I’ve even revamped the course twice, since it seems like there’s real potential.

All this to say: no matter how many features you add, no matter how much you plan, your most successful product might be the one you least expect. I’m still surprised.

Have you ever experienced something similar?
