Anthropic is conditioning our minds

Hacker News - Mon, 06/01/2026 - 10:43pm

anthropic financially rewards its users by encouraging them to use their software in a certain way.

the slow learners, the thinkers, the multitaskers, they are penalized when they leave open work in the computer hardware's ram. if you leave a window open too long, it asks "do you want to pay in tokens to reload the context from disk, or do you want to start from scratch?" with the option for a summary, which was calculated when the context was unloaded from cache.

the people who work consistently and in a focused way are the ones that are cheapest on their server hardware lifespan infrastructure capability. I wonder which path is most effective? Surely the workers prefer the one that is easiest and most engaging for the mind. I bet the preference depends on the mind...

anyway I bring no value judgements on if it's good or bad I just thought of that and I thought that someone somewhere should read about that for some reason

they encourage you to use a full-screen window and just to think your way through problems instead of looking elsewhere. They do this with the "auto-scroll-down" functionality that triggers whenever your mouse / focus leaves the window. This is very stressful and annoying to people who like to cross-reference. But, it is useful for keeping yourself on task. Without it, it often feels like swimming in a sea of text - this is because people don't know how to pg.up and pg.down.
