Show HN: Vanilla Cookbook – a deceptively simple recipe manager

Hacker News - Sun, 03/23/2025 - 7:14am

Hey folks, lurker, home-chef, food-geek, dev, self-hoster here. I present to you Vanilla Cookbook!

After a little hiatus, I decided to polish my personal recipe software for public consumption. Among other things, it has involved migrating to Svelte 5, fortunately, the update script was pretty decent and I got most of the codebase sorted within a day or two, with a bit of refactoring.

I wanted to migrate away from my Desktop software for a while, even though it was doing its job, I liked the idea of owning my data, and learning on the job. The self-hosted options about at the time weren't the right fit, or missing features. A common design pattern is to parse (either manually or automatically) the ingredient data on import or addition. While in theory, I can see the sense in structuring the data, in practice it never worked out quite right or required some extra steps or UI elements. My aim was to build something that stored the raw data, then did its best to parse it in that form, keeping the UI as simple (vanilla?) as possible. I'm not saying it's the right choice, it was just my choice.

Don't get me wrong, there's been some amazing work put into the self-hosted recipe apps, Mealie and Tandoor are excellent, just not what I was looking for.

Aims, philosophy etc out of the way, here's a brief feature list:

- Recipe Scraping - via script with optional OpenAI API backup, old school bookmarklet - Smart unit conversion, volumetric ingredient matching (cups to grams via an ingredient lookup table), temperature parsing in instructions - Complex ingredient parsing for quantity, units, ranges, fractions, extras - Multiple language support - User management - Data control: Paprika format import/export - Shopping list - Cooking logs - Docker deployment - PWA - Local storage: images + SQLite

It's a crowded marketplace, I know! This is just the app that I wanted to use, hopefully some folks like it too.

Constructive feedback, GitHub issues/contributions/stars(!) are all very welcome.

Show HN: We've built an AI based Discord x Linear integration

Hacker News - Sun, 03/23/2025 - 6:12am

Anyone else using Discord as their internal team chat?

We've been using the official Linear integration for Discord for a while, but it's a lot of overhead to always select the same team, repeat what the issue is, and write another description.

We've built a very simple integration that automatically pre-fills the Linear title, description, priority, and assignee using gpt-4o-mini.
